Review – Locals Too

The follow-up to “Locals Only” arrived in high musical style. Fifteen tracks adorn this compilation and several are already on play lists all over Beach Music Land. There is no “one or two” songs here that are the pick of the litter. Take a listen to The Pat Carpenter Band’s version of “Lucky Lucky Me”. I love Jimmy Ruffin’s & Marvin Gaye’s versions of this tune, but PCB takes it to another level. It’s THAT good. The upbeat “Like To See My Baby” from Angel Rissoff and King Tyrone is another jewel in this musical crown. One of the hottest groups in the “up and coming” category, The Magnificents, score big time with “Baby There’s Something”, penned by member Kim Todd. The entertaining Danny Woods shows his mellow side with his original, “She’s Not Just Another Woman”. It’s good to see a new song from the legendary Catalinas on this CD – “Love Be With You”. Bobby Nantz is on lead vocals, and I swear the boy sounds better the older he gets! This tune is a killer! The Holiday Band’s “Love Is Here and Now You’re Gone” with Mike Neese on lead vocals is another tune that will probably make its way up the charts. Shaggie Maggie, hot on the heels of “Too Hurt To Cry”, are back with “What’s A Matter Baby”. Pam Russell is smoking on this one. The talented R. Mark Black’s “Sassy Woman” is another one that should get some action in the clubs and radio. The sassy Molly Askins and her two partners in rhyme, Butch Barnes & Dino Fair, together known and loved as Sea-Cruz, are kicking some beach butt with “A Little Meat On The Side”. And YES, this IS a blues song! (pardon the inside joke, but I couldn’t resist) A couple of great tunes that are re-released here are “Sweet Life” from the talented Castaways and “One Step Closer” from the dynamic and versatile Rick Strickland. The Young Guns are back with a rollicking rendition of “The Boys Are Back In Town”, Taylor Manning tells us in her “teen age grown up way” that “I Always Get My Man”, Rhonda McDaniel gives us a shagging version of the Kris Kristofferson rock classic “Me and Bobby McGee”, and my buddy Odell Mickens and Wallstreet close out the CD with “Closing Time”. With so many great tunes here, it’s a must have in your collection.
